Union, Maine residents are on edge following the discovery of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart’s body in Crawford Pond on July 3rd. Stewart had embarked on a solo paddleboarding trip just six hours prior.
Her remains were found near 100 Acre Island, a secluded area reachable only by boat. The death has been ruled a homicide, and the Maine State Police (MSP) are investigating the “suspicious” circumstances surrounding the case.
While officials are working diligently, they have released few details, fueling anxiety among residents. Local Gus Williams expressed the community’s confusion, stating, “We don’t know what happened, like, if this was an isolated incident or a personal thing.”
MSP has acknowledged the fear gripping the town of Union and the Crawford Pond community, urging calm and vigilance while the investigation continues. However, the lack of information regarding a suspect or the circumstances of Stewart’s death has done little to quell residents’ concerns.
Williams, who frequents the area, admitted to feeling uneasy, saying he hesitated to walk his dog near the pond after the incident. He added, “In a place where most people don’t lock their doors, like, ever, it definitely feels a little intrusive… terrifying.”
Adding to the unease is the backdrop of other unsolved cases in the New England area. At least 13 bodies have recently been discovered in Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, many in remote or wooded areas.
Last month, 21-year-old Adriana Suazo was found in a wooded area in Milton, Massachusetts. While her cause of death remains undetermined, the string of discoveries has prompted MSP to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
