A Stunning Royal Surprise on Antiques Roadshow

An “Antiques Roadshow” guest received a royal shock when a seemingly ordinary china cup and saucer set turned out to be a treasure worth thousands. The guest, inheriting the set from his late mother, initially estimated its value at around $544. However, the expert’s appraisal revealed a much higher figure, leaving the guest speechless.

The set’s extraordinary value stemmed from its royal provenance. It was a gift from Empress Augusta of Germany, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm, to Reverend Pocock, and even included a letter confirming its royal origins. The cup and saucer, crafted at the Royal Manufactory in Berlin (renowned for its topographical porcelain and the initials KPM), featured a detailed painting of the Electoral Palace in Koblenz, the former residence of the Empress and Kaiser.

The expert, using a magnifying glass to admire the intricate details of the artwork, declared the cup and saucer a true heirloom and a “cabinet piece.” Its value?

A staggering $5,436 to $6,795—more than ten times the guest’s initial estimate. The stunned guest could only express his amazement at the unexpected windfall.
