“Superman” Soars to Box Office Success

The latest Superman film, directed by James Gunn, took flight this weekend, earning an impressive $122 million domestically and $95 million internationally, totaling a global haul of $217 million. The film marks a reboot for the DC character, with David Corenswet donning the iconic cape. Corenswet, known for his roles in “Pearl” and the upcoming “Twisters,” takes on the mantle of Clark Kent and his super-powered alter ego.

Gunn, who became co-CEO of DC Studios in 2022, expressed immense confidence in Corenswet, telling the New York Times, “I think he’s the biggest movie star in the world. I just don’t think people know it yet.” Starring alongside Corenswet are Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

This latest iteration of the Superman story follows previous films, notably the 2013 “Man of Steel” directed by Zack Snyder, which starred Henry Cavill and garnered $125 million in its opening weekend. Snyder also directed “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and initially “Justice League” before stepping down in 2017.

The DC universe is now under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran, appointed co-CEOs and co-chairs of DC Studios in 2022. This new era promises a fresh take on the iconic characters, with a “Supergirl” film starring Milly Alcock already slated for 2026.
