Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faces criticism after comments made following a judge’s ruling against her department and the Trump administration. A federal judge ruled that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers cannot make arrests based solely on race or native language. At a public appearance with ICE officers in Florida, Secretary Noem reacted strongly to the ruling, calling Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, of the US District Court for the Central District of California, “an idiot.” She also indicated her department would appeal the decision, stating, “We’re going to appeal it and we’re going to win.”
Noem’s remarks drew criticism, with MSNBC reporter Joe Scarborough describing her words as having a “toxic impact.” He also suggested that such statements could ultimately hinder the Trump administration’s efforts.
