Baby Dies in Lake: Police Ask for Help

Additional Coverage:

Tragedy struck a family camping trip in Queensland, Australia, over the weekend, leaving a 7-month-old boy dead. The infant was found unresponsive in a lake at a park off Gympie Curra Road in Chatsworth on Saturday morning.

Police were called to the scene around 10:40 a.m. local time. The child’s mother had pulled him from the water prior to their arrival, and bystanders were reportedly performing CPR. The infant was transported to the hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead later that evening.

While the death is currently being treated as unexplained, rather than suspicious, a homicide team has been brought in to assist local detectives and the child trauma unit in the investigation. Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield stated that there are “missing parts” in the timeline leading up to the drowning that investigators are working to piece together.

The family, from North Queensland, had been camping overnight at the park and were preparing to head home when the incident occurred. Police are urging anyone who was at the park between 9 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, to come forward with any information they may have.
