Prince Harry Continues Princess Diana’s Legacy with The HALO Trust in Angola
Prince Harry visited a remote Angolan village on Wednesday, July 16th, participating in a children’s safety class near Africa’s largest remaining minefield. The Duke of Sussex walked across the same area of the minefield he visited in 2013, echoing his mother, Princess Diana’s famous 1997 visit.
Speaking to families living near the minefield, Harry stressed the ongoing danger posed by landmines. “Children should never have to live in fear of playing outside or walking to school,” he stated. “Here in Angola, over three decades later, the remnants of war still threaten lives every day.”
Harry commended the Angolan government’s renewed commitment to landmine clearance, thanking President Lourenço for his leadership. This followed a meeting between Harry and the President on Tuesday, July 15th, where a new three-year contract with The HALO Trust was discussed. Harry also attended a reception hosted by the British Embassy.
James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust, expressed gratitude for both President Lourenço’s leadership and Prince Harry’s dedication. “This new contract is an important step forward in our mission to make Angola mine-free,” Cowan affirmed.
This visit builds upon Harry’s previous trip to Angola with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2019, where they retraced Princess Diana’s steps. At the time, the couple emphasized Diana’s commitment to advocating for those in need, particularly on issues that weren’t always popular.
