Parisian Interlude: A Study Abroad Surprise
My semester abroad in Ireland was filled with the expected: lively pubs, enchanting music, and the occasional bout of homesickness. What I hadn’t anticipated was a heartwarming three-day detour to Paris with my grandparents.
Their own European trip overlapped with my study abroad program, offering a chance for a unique family adventure. While they were initially nervous about navigating a new city with a large tour group, their worries quickly dissipated.
We blended structured activities with spontaneous exploration, balancing time with their friends and making special moments for just the three of us. While using ride-hailing services added to the trip’s cost, it alleviated the stress of public transport and kept us together comfortably.
This slower pace allowed me to appreciate the city’s charm, capturing moments like a street violinist’s performance en route to the Arc de Triomphe. A leisurely stroll through Sacré-Cœur Basilica and the Montmartre district, with coffee breaks and browsing local shops, became a cherished memory.
My grandparents’ relaxed approach to travel subtly influenced me. Their wisdom in embracing a slower pace allowed for a deeper appreciation of the Louvre’s masterpieces, enhanced by a knowledgeable tour guide. A memorable girls’ dinner with my grandma and her friends brought laughter and heartwarming stories, encouraging my continued exploration of the world.
Observing my grandparents throughout the trip revealed new facets of their personalities. I discovered their adventurous spirit, their fondness for specific drinks, and their appreciation for quiet moments.
We shared sweet treats with our morning coffee and found common ground in our love for comfortable silences. In turn, they learned about my growing French language skills and my proficiency with modern travel tools.
Traveling together deepened our bond, proving the adage that you truly learn about someone on a trip. I returned from Paris not only with souvenirs and stories, but with a richer understanding of and a closer connection to my grandparents.
