Stomach Bug Hits Royal Caribbean Cruise

Additional Coverage:

Over 140 passengers and crew aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas fell victim to a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during a July 4th cruise to Mexico. The CDC reports that 134 passengers and 7 crew members experienced symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.

The ship, which sailed round-trip from Los Angeles with stops in Mexico, including Cabo San Lucas, reported the outbreak upon its return on July 11th. Royal Caribbean immediately implemented enhanced sanitation measures, including increased cleaning and disinfection, isolating affected individuals, and collecting stool samples for analysis.

While the exact cause remains undetermined, the CDC is investigating. Norovirus, a common culprit in such outbreaks, is a possibility. Testing is underway to confirm the source.

Royal Caribbean emphasized their commitment to passenger and crew safety, stating their cleaning procedures often exceed public health guidelines. The CDC advises frequent handwashing and thorough washing and cooking of food to prevent the spread of Norovirus. Those experiencing symptoms should isolate for two days after recovery.
