Tragedy at Nassau Open MRI as Man Pulled into Machine by Necklace

A 61-year-old man tragically lost his life after being pulled into an MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI on Wednesday afternoon. According to Nassau County Police, the man entered the MRI room while a scan was in progress. The machine’s powerful magnetic field reacted with his metal necklace, drawing him into the machine.

The incident caused a severe medical emergency, leaving the man in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries less than 24 hours later.

Police say the patient in the MRI machine at the time was a relative of the victim. Upon hearing his relative’s cries, the man entered the room, disregarding warnings and safety protocols.

MRI machines use extremely strong magnetic fields capable of attracting metal objects with tremendous force. These fields are so powerful they can even propel a wheelchair across a room. Standard procedure requires patients to remove all metallic and electronic items before undergoing an MRI.

Medical experts emphasize the critical nature of these safety precautions. Charles Winterfeldt, North Shore University Hospital’s director of imaging services, described the force as akin to “a torpedo trying to get into the middle of the center of the magnet.”

Dr. Payal Sud underscored the potential for catastrophe and the vital importance of adhering to safety measures.
