- I moved in with my brother’s family at 56 after losing my job. It cut my expenses by 90% and allowed me to start over. (businessinsider.com)
After a series of unfortunate events left me jobless and carless, I found myself moving across the country to live with my brother’s family in New Jersey. Earlier this year, a car accident totaled my vehicle, and shortly thereafter, my full-time contract position ended abruptly. With no income and mounting expenses, I knew I needed a change.
Recognizing the importance of financial and emotional stability, especially considering my bipolar diagnosis in 2020, I reached out to my brother. He graciously offered me a place to stay while I got back on my feet, under the conditions that I actively pursue job opportunities and work towards financial stability.
To facilitate the move from Colorado, I launched a GoFundMe campaign, which successfully raised enough money to cover temporary housing, storage, and a one-way plane ticket. The remaining funds helped with transportation and lodging while my brother prepared a room for me.
Living with my brother’s family has significantly reduced my monthly expenses. My previous costs, around $4,000 a month including $1,600 for rent, have dropped to approximately $350. This dramatic decrease has allowed me to focus my energy on job hunting.
I established a daily routine of meditation, exercise, and reading, and invested in tools like ChatGPT and Canva to enhance my job search and explore creative avenues. I also focused on rebuilding my financial plan and exploring ways to generate income through online platforms.
The transition hasn’t been without its challenges. Learning to live with family again required adjustments and patience. However, I remained persistent, reminding myself that rebuilding takes time.
My efforts paid off. In early July, I secured a full-time technical writing position with a Northeastern bank, a role that aligns with my experience and offers a comparable salary. While I’m grateful for the stability this new job provides, I plan to remain with my brother until I’ve addressed my debts and established a solid savings foundation.
This experience has taught me the value of humility, staying calm under pressure, and focusing on what I can control. It’s a testament to the fact that it’s possible to start over at any age, and that sometimes, the most practical solutions come from unexpected places.
