Near-Miss Between Passenger Jet and B-52 Bomber Over North Dakota

A SkyWest Airlines flight operating for Delta Air Lines experienced a dramatic close call with a B-52 bomber on Friday, prompting the pilot to execute an abrupt maneuver to avoid a collision. The incident occurred as Flight 3788, an Embraer E175, approached Minot International Airport after a flight from Minneapolis.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the near-miss, which involved a B-52 Stratofortress from the nearby Minot Air Force Base. In audio that quickly circulated on social media, the pilot can be heard explaining the incident to passengers, apologizing for the “aggressive maneuver” and expressing surprise at the lack of warning from air traffic control. He admitted the experience was “not fun” and not a typical workday.

Passenger Monica Green described a surprisingly calm atmosphere on board despite the dramatic turn. She noted the pilot’s candor, stating that he was transparent and detailed, although visibly stressed by the event. Green recounted texting her husband about circling the airport and her growing anxiety as the situation unfolded.

SkyWest Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, indicating that the flight landed safely after taking evasive action when another aircraft entered its flight path. The airline is also investigating the incident.

Minot Air Force Base, home to the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, houses various aircraft and equipment, including the B-52 bomber.
