Walmart Shopper Refuses to Pay for Self-Checkout

Additional Coverage:

Local TikToker Madilynn Cameron (@themadivlog) recently posted a video expressing her outrage at being asked to pay for a membership to use the self-checkout at her local Walmart. The video, which quickly went viral, shows a frustrated Cameron walking out of the store, venting about the incident.

Cameron claims a Walmart employee told her she needed a membership to use the self-checkout, a service she says she’s used for years without issue. “I have been bagging my own groceries for over five years at Walmart, and now they are asking me to pay for it!”

she exclaimed in the video. Confused, Cameron questioned the need for a membership, stating, “I pay for delivery.

I didn’t know there was a membership.”

The video sparked a debate in the comments section. Some viewers shared Cameron’s surprise, while others pointed out that Walmart offers a paid membership service, Walmart+, which provides access to certain benefits, including express self-checkout lanes. These commenters suggested Cameron may have mistakenly tried to use one of these designated lanes.

It appears there may be some confusion about Walmart’s self-checkout policy. While the retailer does offer free self-checkout lanes for all customers, some express lanes are reserved for Walmart+ members.

A Walmart spokesperson previously confirmed to Reuters that certain self-checkout lanes may be designated for paid members only. Currently, a Walmart+ membership costs $99 per year.

It seems Cameron’s frustration stemmed from encountering one of these members-only lanes, possibly unaware of the distinction.
