Piano Man Plays Surprise on Piano Man
A New York City pedicab driver got the surprise of a lifetime when Billy Joel himself stopped to say hello. The driver, who was playing Joel’s iconic “New York State of Mind” for his two passengers, initially didn’t recognize the legendary singer.
In a humorous exchange caught on camera, the driver even told Joel “Next time!” when the singer first approached.
The video, which Joel posted to social media, shows the driver’s delighted reaction upon realizing who he was talking to. “Oh, nice!
You see, we are playing you, man,” the driver exclaimed, quickly requesting a photo with the star. Joel captioned the post, “We’re in a New York State of Mind…always.”
Another video circulating online shows the driver snapping a picture of his passengers with Joel in the background, creating a truly memorable moment for everyone involved.
This cheerful encounter comes just months after Joel revealed his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder. In a recent interview, he reassured fans, stating that while the diagnosis was “scary,” he is doing well and recovering.
The music icon also discussed his upcoming HBO documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes.” Joel admitted he’s typically reluctant to share his personal life, finding it “almost embarrassing.” However, he hopes the documentary will offer an honest portrayal, simply asking the filmmakers to “tell the truth.”
