Tragedy in Russia’s Far East: Plane Crash Claims 48 Lives

A passenger plane crashed in Russia’s Amur region Thursday morning, killing all 48 people on board. The aircraft, an An-24, was en route from Blagoveshchensk to Tynda when it disappeared from radar. Wreckage was located in a wooded area approximately nine miles from Tynda.

Amur Region Governor Vasily Orlov confirmed the fatalities and declared three days of mourning. Emergency services and rescue crews were dispatched to the crash site.

Spokesperson Artem Korenyako of Russia’s federal aviation agency, Rosaviatsiya, reported that a search and rescue helicopter discovered the burning fuselage. The Ministry of Emergency Situations also confirmed the discovery and noted that over 50 personnel and 10 pieces of equipment were involved in the search and rescue operation.

Irkutsk Oblast Governor Igor Kobzev stated that the flight crew, technical staff, and flight attendants resided in the Irkutsk region. Officials are working to compile a complete passenger list and determine who among them lived in the Irkutsk region.
