Federal Probe Targets UnitedHealth

UnitedHealth Group Under Federal Investigation for Medicare Practices

UnitedHealth Group, the nation’s largest healthcare provider, disclosed Thursday that it is facing a federal criminal and civil investigation by the Department of Justice. The investigation centers around the company’s Medicare practices.

This disclosure comes after a tumultuous year for UnitedHealth Group, including the tragic death of former CEO Brian Thompson last year and the abrupt departure of his successor in May. The company’s stock has struggled significantly, becoming the worst-performing stock on the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the first half of 2025. Following the announcement of the investigation, the stock dipped another 1.5 percent in morning trading.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, UnitedHealth Group stated it is cooperating fully with the DOJ’s requests. The company maintains it initiated contact with the DOJ proactively following media reports about the probe.

UnitedHealth expressed “full confidence” in its practices and pointed to a previous decade-long investigation into its Medicare Advantage business, which concluded with a court-appointed monitor finding no wrongdoing. The company emphasized its commitment to upholding ethical business practices and responsible management of taxpayer dollars.

The Department of Justice has not yet issued a public statement regarding the investigation. This story is developing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
