Tulum Calling: A Jersey Girl’s Mexican Adventure
Angel Kayondo traded Newark’s hustle and bustle for Tulum’s tranquil beaches last November, and she’s not looking back. While her new life isn’t without its quirks, she’s found a home in Mexico’s vibrant Yucatán Peninsula.
Trading Two Bedrooms for Tranquility: The Perks of a Lower Cost of Living
One of the biggest draws? The significant drop in living expenses.
Kayondo’s rent went from a hefty $2,100 for a two-bedroom apartment in Newark to a much more manageable $600 for a one-bedroom in Tulum’s La Veleta neighborhood. Groceries are also easier on the wallet, shrinking from $150 a week to around $80.
Work-Life Balance, Tulum Style
The lower cost of living has allowed Kayondo, a model, content creator, and host, to find a better work-life balance. Gone are the 12-hour days in New Jersey, replaced by a more relaxed schedule that prioritizes creativity and well-being. While career opportunities might not be as abundant in Tulum just yet, Kayondo appreciates the freedom to focus on her craft and connect with a supportive wellness community.
Nature’s Embrace
Swapping skyscrapers for lush greenery, Kayondo now finds herself surrounded by nature, from the vibrant streets to the pristine beaches. The clear waters and clean sands of Tulum’s coastline offer a refreshing contrast to her experiences in New Jersey.
Adjusting to Island Life: Septic Systems and Power Grids
Life in Tulum does come with its adjustments. Kayondo has learned to navigate the intricacies of the local infrastructure, including septic systems that require careful toilet paper management and occasional power outages. These minor inconveniences, however, are a small price to pay for the overall tranquility she’s found.
Missing Sephora, but Embracing Local Finds
While readily available essentials like toilet paper and protein powder have prompted a switch to local brands, Kayondo admits to missing the convenience of large US stores, especially when it comes to her favorite beauty products. The absence of a Sephora means a trip to Playa del Carmen is necessary for restocking her makeup must-haves.
A New Chapter
Despite the occasional challenges, Kayondo is thriving in Tulum. The peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and sense of community have provided the backdrop for personal growth and exciting new ventures. While she dreams of exploring even more distant shores someday, for now, Tulum feels like the perfect place to call home.
