Sydney Sweeney Returns to Social Media After Controversial American Eagle Campaign
Actress Sydney Sweeney has subtly reemerged on social media following a wave of criticism directed at her recent American Eagle ad campaign. The 27-year-old Euphoria star became the face of AE’s fall 2025 denim campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” in July. However, the campaign quickly sparked controversy online.
The central ad, featuring Sweeney narrating while the camera pans across her body, drew accusations of over-sexualization and catering to the male gaze. Lines like, “My body’s composition is determined by my genes.
Hey, eyes up here,” and “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue,” were interpreted by some as a tasteless pun, with some even likening the campaign to “Nazi propaganda.”
Critics on platforms like TikTok voiced their disapproval, calling the ads “weird” and “fascist weird.” While Sweeney herself has not publicly addressed the backlash, she recently posted a picture of a bouquet of pink roses to her Instagram story, offering no further comment.
American Eagle, however, released a statement defending the campaign, emphasizing that it was “always about the jeans,” focusing on Sweeney’s personal style and confidence. The brand reiterated its commitment to celebrating individual expression through their denim line.
