Athens, AL – A Limestone County mother is facing a capital murder charge in the death of her infant son. 35-year-old Morgan Thornton was arrested early Friday morning after deputies responded to a medical call involving the child. While first responders were initially able to find a pulse, the infant was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Investigators allege Thornton was responsible for the injuries that led to the infant’s death and noted she appeared intoxicated at the time of the incident. A blood sample was obtained. When informed of the charges against her, a confused Thornton reportedly stated, “I don’t understand.”

Thornton later spoke with local news, claiming she only remembered putting her son to bed and attempting CPR. Neighbors expressed disbelief at the allegations, describing Thornton and her husband as residents of a rented home with their two children.

Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin requested prayers for the family and all those who responded to the scene. He commended the deputies, firefighters, EMTs, hospital staff, and DHR workers for their efforts to save the child.

Thornton has been denied bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. In Alabama, a capital murder conviction can result in the death penalty.
