Denmark Zoo Wants Your Pets for Predator Food

Additional Coverage:

Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has sparked controversy by publicly requesting pet donations—specifically chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs—to feed their predators. The zoo defended the practice, stating it replicates the natural food chain and ensures nothing goes to waste, promoting the predators’ natural behaviors and well-being. While the zoo insists this approach benefits the animals, it has ignited online debate.

The zoo also accepts donated horses, which are euthanized and then used as food. Horse owners can reportedly receive a tax deduction for these donations. Smaller animals can be dropped off on weekdays, with a limit of four per donation.

This isn’t the first time a Danish zoo has engaged in such practices. In 2014, Copenhagen Zoo faced a public outcry after euthanizing a healthy giraffe and feeding it to lions.

Weeks later, the same zoo euthanized four lions to make way for a new male. Both instances ignited significant discussion about animal welfare and zoo practices.
