SoCal Man Ditches DoorDash, Wallet and Waistline Thank Him

A Southern California resident who works from home has shared his story of breaking free from a costly and unhealthy DoorDash addiction. He recounts ordering food around the clock, spending nearly $11,000 on the delivery service in 2024. This excessive spending, coupled with a diabetes diagnosis, prompted a lifestyle overhaul.

His wake-up call came during a doctor’s visit last July when he learned his A1C level was a dangerously high 14.9. Surprisingly, his initial reaction wasn’t to curb his DoorDash habit. In fact, he spent even more on the service in the months following his diagnosis.

However, he did make one positive change: he joined a gym. This decision proved to be a turning point. By October, his A1C level had dropped significantly to 7.4, a result his doctor praised.

A review of his DoorDash history revealed a pattern of excessive spending on convenience foods and sugary drinks. He notes orders ranging from fast food to large hauls of chips and soda, often exceeding $50 per order.

In 2025, he finally took control of his spending and his health. He started cooking more meals at home and reserved DoorDash for truly special occasions. As a result, his DoorDash spending plummeted to just $146.74 in the first part of 2025, putting him on track to save over $10,000 compared to the previous year.

More importantly, his latest glucose reading averaged 6.5%, a dramatic improvement from his earlier alarming levels. He credits breaking his DoorDash habit with resetting his relationship with food, emphasizing that he now views food as nourishment rather than comfort. While thrilled with his healthier lifestyle and financial savings, he admits his only regret is not making the change sooner.
