“Pawn Stars” viewers know Rick Harrison is usually a tough negotiator, always looking for a bargain. So when he opens his wallet wide, it’s got to be something special.
In one episode, Harrison’s book expert, Adam, brought in a real treasure: a 16th-century copy of “Dance of Death.” Initially hesitant, Harrison was swayed when rare book specialist Rebecca Romney confirmed its authenticity and value.
Adam introduced the book with a touch of irony, calling the macabre “Dance of Death” one of the most “uplifting” books he’d ever brought in. The book, filled with woodblock prints depicting the Grim Reaper, was indeed in remarkable condition. Adam pointed out its potential appeal to a wide range of collectors.
Harrison quickly learned the book was created by Hans Holbein, court painter to King Henry VIII. The seller’s asking price?
A cool $10,000. Harrison, never one to jump the gun, summoned Romney for her expert opinion.
Romney was immediately impressed, calling it her favorite book the shop had ever seen. She explained the book’s historical context, linking its morbid theme to the plagues and famines of the 14th century. Romney estimated the book could easily fetch $16,000, or even more to the right buyer.
Knowing he couldn’t lowball the seller after that appraisal, Harrison offered $9,000. After a brief negotiation, they settled on $9,500.
Harrison, confident in the investment, pointed out his successful track record with Adam’s books. A deal was struck, and a very happy Adam walked away with a hefty profit, joking that he would use the money to “celebrate life.”
