Harry and Meghan’s Netflix Deal Raises Questions

Additional Coverage:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Productions has inked a new multi-year deal with Netflix. This first-look agreement extends their existing partnership, which began in 2020 and already includes five projects, and expands it to encompass Markle’s lifestyle brand, As Ever.

While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex expressed enthusiasm for the expanded collaboration, some royal watchers are questioning its significance. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams suggested the deal, reportedly worth less than their initial arrangement, indicates a decline in the couple’s A-list status. He pointed to the lack of new high-profile projects, aside from the long-awaited adaptation of “Meet Me at the Lake,” as a potential factor.

However, branding expert Doug Eldridge offered a different perspective, arguing that the deal’s focus on the As Ever brand could prove lucrative for both parties. He downplayed the perceived “downgrade,” emphasizing the couple’s continued creative projects with Netflix. Eldridge suggested this strategic shift allows them to diversify their ventures beyond reality television.

Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner expressed uncertainty about the couple’s future brand value within Netflix. He speculated that a potential reconciliation with the UK royal family could significantly impact their standing and marketability.

Despite the differing opinions, Netflix appears committed to its partnership with the Sussexes. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, praised their influence and the success of their previous projects, including the docuseries “Harry & Meghan” and the “With Love, Meghan” series. Season two of “With Love, Meghan” is set to premiere this month, followed by a holiday special in December.
