Sparks Coach Backs Plum After Controversial Kick

Los Angeles Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts has defended guard Kelsey Plum following an on-court incident involving Golden State Valkyries star Veronica Burton. During the Sparks’ weekend loss to the Valkyries, Plum was called for a flagrant foul after tripping Burton. The situation escalated when Plum appeared to kick Burton while on the floor, sparking a heated exchange between the players.

While some fans and social media users have called for Plum’s suspension, Coach Roberts insists the kick was unintentional. “The flagrant, she was trying to kick the ball,” Roberts told reporters.

“She didn’t mean to [kick Burton]. I didn’t see the replay, but I saw it live, and I know she didn’t mean anything by it.

She’s not a dirty player.”

Roberts also addressed Plum’s struggles shooting during the game, attributing it to the Valkyries’ tough defense. “Kelsey had a tough shooting night, but she’s not alone in that,” Roberts acknowledged.

“They were physical. Any time she got in the paint, there were bodies.”

This incident comes amidst recent controversy surrounding Plum, including a video of her declining fan autograph requests and comments she made about Caitlin Clark during All-Star weekend. Despite the backlash, the WNBA has not announced any disciplinary action against Plum. The Sparks, who have won nine of their last eleven games, will be hoping to continue their strong push towards the playoffs with Plum in the lineup.
