Bridgeport to Port Jefferson Ferry: A Perfect Day Trip

A recent sunny Sunday found me reliving a cherished memory – a ferry trip from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Port Jefferson, New York. Some 20 years had passed since I last made the journey, but the charm of the trip remained as enticing as ever.

The $39 round-trip ticket purchased online secured my passage on the Long Island, the newest vessel in the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company fleet. Boarding was a breeze, and I was immediately impressed by the abundance of seating options both inside and on the deck.

While I’d packed my own snacks, the aroma from the onboard café proved irresistible. I indulged in some warm and tasty French toast sticks – a worthy $6 splurge.

Though the outdoor seating area beckoned, a blustery wind kept me inside for most of the 75-minute journey. The occasionally choppy waters also encouraged a more stationary appreciation of the scenic views from the lounge windows.

This comfortable space offered a bar, TVs, and prime viewing for our arrival into Port Jefferson.

Stepping off the ferry, I was greeted by the quaint streets of Port Jefferson, lined with charming shops, inviting parks, and a diverse array of restaurants. A stroll through the Harborfront Park farmers market offered a delightful array of local goods. The waterfront, dotted with sailboats, a striking statue, and a whimsical oversized Adirondack chair, provided a picturesque backdrop for my explorations.

A refreshing chai tea from Local’s Cafe fueled my continued browsing of the unique local shops. Lunch at Slurp Ramen hit the spot, followed by a sweet treat from the renowned Dortoni Bakery, known for its delectable Italian pastries.

By mid-afternoon, with contented feet and a slightly lighter wallet, I returned to the marina for my return trip. The ferry ride back to Bridgeport was as comfortable and relaxing as the journey over.

The overall experience was delightful, solidifying the ferry trip to Port Jefferson as a perfect summer day escape. Whether traveling solo or with companions, the journey offers a unique blend of relaxation and exploration. I wholeheartedly recommend it and plan to return again soon.
