Navigating the New Normal: When Your College Kid Brings Home a Significant Other

Welcoming a college student home for break is a joyous occasion, but it can also be an adjustment. They’ve grown and changed, and sometimes, they bring back more than just dirty laundry. This summer, my son returned from his freshman year with a new girlfriend in tow, prompting a crash course in navigating this new phase of parenting.

Setting Ground Rules, Respecting Boundaries

Before our son’s girlfriend arrived, we had a family discussion about house rules. These were less about strict guidelines and more about reminders of common courtesy and respect – things like giving us a general idea of their plans and, of course, no impaired driving.

The key discussion point was sleeping arrangements. We agreed they could share my son’s room, emphasizing the importance of discretion.

This open communication set a comfortable tone from the start.

Giving Them Space to Explore

Once the initial ground rules were established, we took a step back. My husband and I offered suggestions for activities, but largely left the itinerary planning to our son.

We provided them with a car and encouraged them to explore our city and pursue their shared interests. This gave them the freedom to connect and create their own experiences, and honestly, we barely saw them!

Privacy and Understanding: The Keys to Harmony

Providing privacy was paramount. We knocked before entering any closed doors and resisted the urge to hover or pry into their activities.

They needed time together, away from parental oversight. This meant accepting late nights, sleeping in, and a diet consisting primarily of cereal, candy, and ramen.

It was a nostalgic reminder of our own college days.

A Happy Ending, and an Open Invitation

The week flew by seamlessly. We enjoyed getting to know our son’s girlfriend, and she seemed to enjoy her time with us as well.

We made sure she knew she was welcome back anytime. It was heartwarming to see our son in a happy, healthy relationship, a welcome sight in a world often dominated by screens and virtual connections.

While it was a bit surreal to witness our son navigating adulthood with his girlfriend under our roof, we were grateful for the experience.
