Counterfeit “Labubu” Dolls Deemed Choking Hazard; CPSC Issues Warning
Parents beware: knockoff versions of the popular Labubu plush toys, dubbed “Lafufus” online, pose a serious choking hazard to young children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning urging consumers to avoid these counterfeit products. The agency has seized thousands of these fake dolls, citing violations of federal safety regulations.
“These fake dolls have no place in American homes,” stated Acting Commission Chairman Peter A. Feldman.
“No parent should have to worry about a toy potentially suffocating their child.” Feldman emphasized the importance of purchasing toys only from reputable sellers.
Labubu dolls, monster-like plush toys and keychains, gained immense popularity this summer, fueled by social media unboxing videos. As demand surged, so did prices on the resale market, creating an opening for counterfeiters. Consumers have reported these “Lafufus” falling apart easily, with heads and eyes detaching, presenting a significant choking risk.
The CPSC offers tips to distinguish genuine Labubus from counterfeits. Authentic Labubus feature a holographic Pop Mart sticker and newer versions include a UV stamp on one foot.
Consumers should also be wary of deep discounts and unreliable sellers. Always check for appropriate choking hazard warnings and labels before purchasing any toy.
