Adults Turning to Kids’ Menus to Beat Inflation

Amid rising food costs, a surprising number of adults are rediscovering the children’s menu. New research from Lightspeed Commerce reveals that approximately 44% of adults are now ordering from kids’ menus to save money and enjoy smaller portions.

This trend comes as major fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Wendy’s report declining breakfast sales, likely due to economic pressures on consumers. Adults surveyed cited smaller portions, simpler options, and lower prices as key factors driving them to the kids’ menu. Lightspeed researchers noted the shift, stating that the kids’ menu is “becoming a smart option — not just a nostalgic one.”

The cost savings can be significant. While prices vary by location, a Happy Meal at a New York City McDonald’s, for example, can be comparable in price to a standard adult value meal, but with the added bonus of a drink and side. This comes as no surprise given the rising cost of dining out, with the consumer price index indicating a 3.9% increase in restaurant prices over the last year.
