A Dream Honeymoon: No Regrets for Newlyweds Who Splurged Wedding Cash
A Melbourne couple chose to spend their wedding gift money on a luxurious honeymoon, a decision they stand by years later.
In 2015, journalist Melissa Noble and her husband, a remedial massage therapist, held their wedding at a Queensland vineyard. Having recently returned to Australia after three years of travel, the couple opted for a wishing well in lieu of traditional gifts, hoping to avoid accumulating more possessions in their small apartment.
Their guests generously gifted approximately $4,000 Australian dollars, a sum that could have gone towards a house deposit. Instead, the couple, expecting their first child, decided on a “babymoon” honeymoon.
They jetted off to Daydream Island in the Whitsundays, where they enjoyed a week of relaxation and romance. From buffet breakfasts and poolside lounging to rainforest walks and water sports, the island provided a perfect escape.
Evenings were spent strolling along the beach, enjoying the open-air cinema, and indulging in fresh seafood. The best part?
Thanks to the generosity of their wedding guests, the entire experience was prepaid.
Noble recalls the bittersweet end of their honeymoon, tearing up on the plane ride home as the reality of their return to Melbourne set in. While acknowledging the practicality of saving for a house, the couple maintains they have no regrets.
The honeymoon remains a cherished memory, a special time before their family grew to include three children. Eventually, they did purchase a family home, proving that sometimes, a little indulgence can coexist with long-term goals.
