Idaho Roommate Saw Masked Man

Newly released police bodycam footage offers a chilling glimpse into the immediate aftermath of the University of Idaho murders. The video, taken by an officer responding to the 911 call, documents the scene at 1122 King Road, where Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were found stabbed to death.

The footage reveals a typical college house, with remnants of a party still visible. Outside, the officer instructs the visibly shaken group of friends and roommates gathered in the driveway to remain at the scene. He then retrieves crime scene tape, marking the beginning of the investigation.

The video captures a poignant interaction between the officer and Dylan Mortensen, one of the surviving roommates. Wrapped in a blanket, a tearful Mortensen recounts the events of the night.

She describes hearing Goncalves and her dog go upstairs, followed by Goncalves saying, “Someone’s here,” and then a scream. Mortensen then recalls hearing a male voice say, “You’re gonna be OK, I’m going to help you.”

Investigators believe this voice was Kernodle’s.

A frightened Mortensen tells the officer she locked her bedroom door. She then describes hearing crying, and later, opening her door to see a masked man dressed in black. The man said nothing and, according to Mortensen, exited through the sliding glass door.

Mortensen then went to the room of the other surviving roommate, Bethany Funke, on the ground floor. She briefly saw Xana Kernodle, seemingly unconscious, but dismissed it, thinking Kernodle was asleep. The roommates then went to bed.

The next morning, the roommates discovered their friends unresponsive and called other friends to the house before contacting 911. Mortensen provides the officer with the names and room locations of each resident. At the time of this interaction, she was unaware of the tragic fate of her roommates.

Bryan Kohberger, who later pleaded guilty to the murders, was sentenced to four life terms plus 10 years. Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the crime, and Kohberger declined to make a statement at his sentencing.
