Russia Accuses Ukraine of Nuclear Plant Attack on Independence Day
On Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day, Russia claimed Ukrainian drones struck multiple targets within its borders, including a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region. Russian officials reported a fire at the plant, which they say was quickly extinguished.
While a transformer was damaged, radiation levels remained normal, according to the plant’s press service. The UN’s nuclear watchdog acknowledged reports of the incident but said it lacked independent confirmation.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the accusation.
In addition to the alleged nuclear plant attack, a fire broke out at the Ust-Luga port, a key fuel export terminal in Russia’s Leningrad region. The regional governor attributed the blaze to debris from downed Ukrainian drones, claiming around 10 were intercepted.
Russia’s Defense Ministry asserted its air defenses neutralized 95 Ukrainian drones overnight. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting or jamming 48 of 72 drones and decoys, along with a cruise missile, launched by Russia.
Amidst these attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a defiant Independence Day address from Kyiv, emphasizing Ukraine’s determination to secure a “just peace” and build a secure future. He highlighted international respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, referencing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Kyiv on Sunday.
Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, underscored the importance of Canada’s support. Norway also announced substantial military aid to Ukraine, pledging nearly $700 million for air defense systems, including joint funding with Germany for two Patriot systems.
Fighting continued in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming territorial gains in the Donetsk region.
