Phoenix Engulfed by Dramatic Haboob

A powerful dust storm, known as a haboob, swept through the Phoenix metropolitan area Monday late afternoon, plunging the city into darkness and leaving tens of thousands of residents without power.

The storm originated in Arizona City, southeast of Phoenix, before rapidly advancing on the metropolitan area. Residents described the intense experience of feeling the wind shake their cars and tasting dust in the air during the 15-minute onslaught. One resident, Bernae Boykin Hitesman, recounted having to pull over while driving her children home from school due to near-zero visibility.

The haboob, a phenomenon caused by strong winds lifting dust and sand from dry terrain, was followed by heavy rain and strong winds. These conditions resulted in widespread power outages, with 15,000 customers affected in Maricopa County alone.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport experienced flight disruptions and minor damage to a terminal roof. Airport officials confirmed crews were working to address leaks and clear water from passenger areas.
