Danish Officials Summon US Envoy Over Greenland Influence Concerns
Copenhagen – The Danish Foreign Ministry summoned the US envoy on Wednesday following a report alleging American attempts to influence Greenlandic society. Danish public broadcaster DR revealed an investigation claiming at least three Americans with links to former President Donald Trump are conducting operations in Greenland, raising fears of efforts to sway public opinion towards Greenland’s secession from Denmark and annexation by the US.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, holds significant resources and strategic importance. Former President Trump has openly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing security reasons, but both Greenland and Denmark firmly oppose this notion.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen released a statement acknowledging foreign interest in Greenland and the potential for external influence attempts. He stressed the close and trusting cooperation between Denmark and Greenland and vowed to address any unacceptable interference in Danish internal affairs.
The DR investigation, citing eight sources across Denmark, Greenland, and the US, alleges the Americans are attempting to “infiltrate Greenlandic society.” One individual reportedly compiled a list of Trump supporters in Greenland, aiming to build a secessionist movement. Two others contacted Greenlandic politicians and business figures, raising concerns they could be used to advance Trump’s annexation agenda.
While the DR report does not confirm whether these actions were directed by the US government, the incident underscores the ongoing tension surrounding Greenland’s status and its relationship with the US.
