Seattle Gastroenterologist Shares His Gut-Healthy Diet

Dr. Neelendu Dey, a 45-year-old gastroenterologist and associate professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, researches the link between gut health and colon cancer. He also practices what he preaches, following a predominantly plant-based diet to maintain his own gut health.

While Dey focuses on whole foods, fiber, and avoids excessive junk food, his diet is anything but bland. He enjoys a variety of flavorful meals, including Pad See Ew, tacos, and ramen. Dey believes that maintaining a diverse gut microbiome, the trillions of microbes residing in our colons, is crucial for overall health and may help lower the risk of colon cancer, a disease increasingly affecting those under 50.

Scientific research supports Dey’s approach. Studies have shown a correlation between consuming plant-based foods like vegetables, nuts, and beans, and a diverse, healthy microbiome. Conversely, ultra-processed foods and processed red meats have been linked to a less diverse microbiome and increased colon cancer risk.

Dey emphasizes variety in his diet, aiming for a wide range of plant-based options and incorporating resistant starches like oats, which provide beneficial fatty acids. However, he also acknowledges the realities of a busy life and doesn’t adhere to rigid restrictions.

“With the demands of modern life…sometimes you just need the calories,” he admits. He also consumes alcohol in moderation, mindful of its potential impact on colon health.

In addition to diet, Dey maintains an active lifestyle with activities like soccer, pickleball, jogging, and climbing, further contributing to his gut health and overall well-being.

A glimpse into Dr. Dey’s two-week food diary reveals a balanced approach to healthy eating: His breakfast often consists of cereal with fruit and plant-based milk, while lunches and dinners range from leftovers to restaurant meals, always with a focus on plant-based options.

Snacks include fruit, nuts, and the occasional treat. His diet also reflects the demands of his busy schedule, incorporating quick meals and snacks when necessary.
