- After failing to indict on felony, feds charge DC sandwich thrower with misdemeanor (abcnews.go.com)
A D.C. grand jury has declined to indict a man accused of assaulting a Customs and Border Patrol agent with a sandwich. Sean Dunn, the former Department of Justice employee who allegedly threw the sandwich earlier this month, now faces a misdemeanor charge filed through a criminal information, bypassing the grand jury process.
The initial felony assault charge stemmed from an incident where Dunn confronted the officer, reportedly shouting expletives and protesting the federal presence in the city. Video footage appears to show Dunn throwing a sandwich, which struck the officer in the chest.
This incident prompted a strong response from the White House and Justice Department, including the release of a video showcasing Dunn’s arrest. Dunn’s attorney maintains that he had offered to surrender prior to the publicized arrest.
The incident occurred during a period of increased tension surrounding the presence of federal law enforcement in D.C. following President Trump’s deployment of agents and National Guard troops.
