Tragedy struck the skies over Fort Morgan Municipal Airport Sunday morning when two small planes collided during landing attempts, leaving one dead and three injured.
The midair collision involved a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, each carrying two people. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find black smoke and active flames, with at least one person trapped in the wreckage. One of the planes was left in ruins beside the runway, surrounded by debris and blackened ground.
The two occupants of the Cessna escaped with minor injuries, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. However, one of the individuals in the second aircraft died at the scene, while the other was transported to the hospital.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
