A New Jersey man tragically drowned on Tuesday while swimming in the Delaware River near a popular Pennsylvania picnic area. The 30-year-old from Parsippany was with family members near the Kittatinny Point area of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area when he attempted to swim across the river. He reportedly tired in the water, went under, and did not resurface.
Around 4:10 p.m., a drowning report reached the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area’s emergency communications center. National Park Service rangers, their dive team, New Jersey State Police, and local water rescue teams from Portland, Pennsylvania swiftly responded. The man’s body was recovered from a section of the river approximately 17 feet deep.
While the exact water conditions at the time of the drowning remain unclear, the National Park Service emphasizes the importance of wearing a life jacket for all water activities, including swimming, floating, fishing, and boating on the Delaware River.
