Eastern Afghanistan continues to tremble following Sunday’s devastating earthquake, which has now claimed the lives of 2,205 people and injured 3,640, according to a Taliban government spokesperson. Search and rescue operations are still underway.
A new 5.6 magnitude quake struck the region on Thursday, adding to the already dire situation. The extent of any additional damage caused by this latest tremor is not yet known.
Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat provided the updated casualty figures and stated that tents are being provided for displaced families, and the distribution of essential aid is in progress.
The initial 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck just before midnight on Sunday, followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 5.2 magnitude quake on Tuesday.
