World Traveler Finds Her Favorite City in Mexico

Puerto Vallarta: My Favorite Mexican Getaway

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to over 20 countries, but Mexico holds a special place in my heart. And within Mexico, one city reigns supreme: Puerto Vallarta. Forget the typical resort town image, Puerto Vallarta offers a vibrant mix of stunning beaches, a bustling downtown, and tons of outdoor adventures.

I’ve visited four times in the past two years alone – with friends, family, and even for a bachelorette party – and each trip has been unique and memorable. Whether you crave nature, nightlife, relaxation, or amazing food, Puerto Vallarta has something for everyone.

A Foodie’s Paradise: From Street Tacos to Fine Dining

One of the best things about traveling is trying new foods, and Puerto Vallarta delivers. For a classic street food experience, head to Pancho’s Takos.

Be prepared to queue – the al pastor tacos are legendary! But the wait is part of the fun, as you’re right in the heart of downtown, surrounded by street performers and the lively energy of the city.

If you’re looking for something more upscale, check out the restaurants along Playa Los Muertos, the main beach. El Dorado is a personal favorite, offering fresh seafood, delicious cocktails, and top-notch service.

Dining with your toes in the sand at sunset? Pure magic.

(Reservations are a must!)

Dancing the Night Away in Zona Romántica

Puerto Vallarta’s nightlife is electric and inclusive. The Zona Romántica, or Romantic Zone, is the epicenter, with bars and nightclubs on every corner.

It’s also a hub for the LGBTQ+ community, giving it a similar vibe to West Hollywood. As the sun sets, the energy explodes, and the streets fill with music and dancing.

If you’re looking for a party, Zona Romántica is the place to be.

Outdoor Adventures Abound

Nature lovers, rejoice! Puerto Vallarta offers a wealth of outdoor activities.

Hike the Palo Maria waterfall trail, a moderate 1.4-mile trek that leads to a refreshing swimming hole. Or, if you’re visiting between December and March, witness the awe-inspiring migration of humpback whales in Banderas Bay.

For an underwater adventure, try snorkeling at Los Arcos National Marine Park. You can get there by boat or kayak – I opted for a kayaking tour and loved it. From hiking to whale watching to exploring the underwater world, Puerto Vallarta truly has it all.
