Grandpa’s Painting Worth a Fortune, But Not For Sale

Additional Coverage:

A treasured family heirloom, a painting by renowned artist Henry Siddons Mowbray, was recently appraised on Antiques Roadshow, leaving its owner pleasantly surprised. The painting, a vibrant depiction of classical figures, had been a cherished possession, hanging above the owner’s bed since he was 16. He inherited the piece from his grandfather, who was a notable artist himself and a contemporary of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and the architectural firm of Stanford White, McKim, Mead, and White.

Roadshow expert Colleene Fesko highlighted the painting’s connection to the American Renaissance period, noting Mowbray’s influence by classical themes and his contributions to the interior design of grand mansions in Newport and New York. Fesko praised the painting’s “luscious” quality and “beautiful palette,” emphasizing the pastel colors and overall aesthetic accomplishment.

The appraisal estimated the artwork’s auction value between $50,000 and $75,000, much to the owner’s astonishment. However, he affirmed his intention to keep the painting within the family, stating he “could never sell it.” Fesko concluded by commending the piece as “a great painting to wake up to.”
