Evergreen, CO – Tragedy struck Evergreen High School just after noon today as a student opened fire, injuring two classmates before taking their own life. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooter’s death Wednesday evening.
Three students were initially transported to the hospital in critical condition, including the shooter. As of Wednesday evening, one of the wounded students remains in critical condition while the other is stable. A fourth student was also taken to the hospital, though the nature of their injuries is unknown.
The school was immediately placed on lockdown as law enforcement, including hundreds of officers, swept the campus. Students were later reunited with their parents at Bergen Meadow Elementary.
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley addressed the media earlier, describing the incident as “the scariest thing you’d think could ever happen.” Kelley stated the shooter was armed with a revolver and that authorities were seeking a warrant for the student’s home and locker. The spokesperson declined to provide further details about the shooter, including age or gender, noting uncertainty about whether the suspect was even old enough to drive.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed devastation over the shooting, offering condolences to the victims and their families. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI are also involved, with FBI Director Kash Patel pledging full support to local authorities. The investigation is ongoing.
