Adapting to island life has been a breeze. The sunny weather is a welcome change from California’s fog, and with English widely spoken, language hasn’t been a barrier. The welcoming community, a mix of locals and expats, has made Gozo feel like home.
Living comfortably on Social Security is a reality for Charlebois and Scanlon. Their spacious, sea-view apartment costs less than $1,000 a month – a fraction of California prices. Utilities and groceries are equally affordable, allowing them to save money each month.
Healthcare has also been a positive experience. While they maintain private insurance as digital nomads (costing around $4,600 annually), their coverage is comprehensive, with no deductible and 100% reimbursement. They even had a positive emergency room experience, costing a mere €559, fully reimbursed – a stark contrast to potential US costs.
The Mediterranean diet is another perk. Fresh, local produce and seafood are readily available, allowing the couple to eat organic on a regular basis. Weekly market visits also provide a sense of community connection, contributing to Gozo’s relaxed lifestyle.
Travel, a key retirement goal, is now easier and more affordable. Malta’s central location provides convenient access to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The couple is using their savings to explore the world, a dream come true.
