A black bear’s unexpected shopping spree at a New Jersey Dollar General ended tragically after authorities were forced to euthanize the animal. The 175-pound bear was caught on video strolling the aisles of the store before being lured outside by a quick-thinking shopper, Sean Clarkin.
However, the bear’s visit quickly turned concerning as it began exhibiting erratic and aggressive behavior, threatening people and pets. One woman was injured by the bear and taken to the hospital.
Authorities initially attempted to scare the bear away using rubber bullets, but it returned and attacked a local resident’s German Shepherd, Lucky. Luckily, bystanders were able to distract the bear and get the dog to safety.
The bear was subsequently shot and killed by officials.
The incident left witnesses shaken. Christine Flohr, who observed the events unfold, tearfully recounted the moment she learned the bear had been put down. The New Jersey Fish and Wildlife officials are now testing the bear’s remains for rabies.
Following the incident, officials are reminding the public about bear safety. If encountering a bear, experts advise speaking calmly, slowly waving your arms, and making yourself appear as large as possible.
Do not run or climb a tree. In the event of a brown or grizzly bear attack, playing dead is recommended.
However, if attacked by a black bear, you should try to escape or fight back as a last resort.
