Could Your Spare Change Be Worth a Fortune? Check Your Dimes!

Digging through your couch cushions for spare change may be more lucrative than you think. Some rare dimes are worth significantly more than their face value, potentially fetching hundreds or even thousands of dollars. So, before you toss those dimes aside, take a closer look!

Here are ten dimes to watch out for:

  1. 1965 Roosevelt Dime (No Mint Mark): Some 1965 Philadelphia-minted Roosevelt dimes lack the usual “P” mint mark.

Those in excellent condition, especially with full bands (the horizontal lines across the torch on the back) or a visible copper layer peeking through, can be quite valuable. While most are worth slightly above face value, some have sold for over $1,000.

  1. 1965 Roosevelt Silver Dime: 1965 marked the transition from 90% silver dimes to copper-nickel ones.

A few silver dimes slipped into circulation, and if you find one, it could be worth thousands. One even sold for over $8,000 in 2019.

  1. 1871-CC Seated Liberty Dime: This 19th-century dime, featuring Lady Liberty, has a “CC” mint mark below the wreath on the back. Extremely rare, with only around 100 believed to exist, one sold for over $270,000 in 2014.
  1. 1970-S Roosevelt Dime (No Mint Mark): A small number of 1970-S dimes were mistakenly minted without a mint mark, making them a valuable collector’s item potentially worth hundreds of dollars.
  1. 1982-1983 Roosevelt Dimes (No Mint Mark): Similar to the 1970-S, some dimes from these years lack a mint mark and are worth considerably more than ten cents.
  1. 1919-D Mercury Dime: This dime features Lady Liberty in a winged headdress.

While millions were minted, finding one in good condition is rare. A well-preserved example could be worth hundreds of thousands; one sold for over $218,000 in 2000.

  1. 1996-W Roosevelt Dime: Created for the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime, this West Point minted coin is relatively scarce. While a typical one might fetch around $50, some collectors pay much more.
  1. 1800 Draped Bust Dime: This extremely rare dime, depicting Lady Liberty with a ribbon in her hair, is estimated to have only 200 surviving examples. A pristine one sold for $192,000 in 2022.
  1. 2020-D Roosevelt Dime: The lower mintage of the 2020-D dime, coupled with its pandemic-year significance, could make it a future collectible. While one sold for $338 on eBay in 2021, a more realistic value is around $15.
  1. 1941-1942-D Overdate Mercury Dime: Some Mercury dimes from the Denver mint bear both the 1941 and 1942 dates.

These rare “overdate” dimes can be worth several hundred dollars, with mint condition examples fetching much more. One sold for over $25,000 in 2016.

Bottom Line: While finding a dime worth a fortune is a long shot, it’s worth checking your change. Pay close attention to dates, mint marks, and condition.

Consider consulting a coin appraiser for a professional valuation before selling. You might be surprised by what your spare change is really worth!
