“Pork Chops and Applesauce!” Christopher Knight Still Embraces Iconic Brady Bunch Line
For fans of classic TV, few lines are as instantly recognizable as Peter Brady’s “pork chops and applesauce.” And guess what? The man behind the voice, Christopher Knight, is more than happy to deliver it on demand.
In a recent interview, the actor-turned-furniture-entrepreneur revealed that nearly 55 years after the line first aired, people still ask him to utter Peter Brady’s famous menu request. And Knight, now 67, doesn’t mind one bit.
“You will get no resistance from me,” Knight stated. “It makes them comfortable, and if it brings a smile to their faces, it doesn’t bother me.”
Talk about dedication! Knight is so closely tied to the phrase that he even named one of his production companies “Pork Chop Phenomenon.” He explained, “I have a pork chop phenomenon that no one else has in life in that I’m asked to say, ‘pork chops and applesauce.'”
The unforgettable line first graced our screens in a March 1971 episode of The Brady Bunch titled “The Personality Kid.” Playing the middle son, Peter, Knight’s character was trying to spice up his persona by imitating Humphrey Bogart. When dinner was announced, Peter, in his best Bogie impression, delivered the now-legendary query: “Pork chops and applesauce… isn’t that swell.”
Knight has often shared his thoughts on the line’s enduring legacy, noting that while he initially didn’t understand its massive appeal, he’s come to embrace it wholeheartedly. In fact, his association with the dish extends beyond just a catchphrase.
“And if anybody’s serving a pork chop at a restaurant and they recognize me, they say they have a great pork chop, and I should have the pork chop,” he shared. “I am associated with pork chops. And so I love pork chops.”
Indeed, the former Brady kid has become quite the pork chop enthusiast, even sharing his own four-ingredient recipe for the dish. Who knew Peter Brady would become the ultimate pork chop connoisseur? And yes, by all accounts, his recipe looks pretty “swell.”
