Starbucks Announces North American Store Closures, Job Cuts; Affected Locations Emerge
Starbucks revealed a significant shake-up in its North American operations last week, announcing widespread job cuts and the closure of more than 100 coffee shops. The move, detailed by CEO Brian Niccol on September 25, impacts roughly 900 Starbucks positions and represents approximately one percent of the company’s coffee shop locations.
As the news of these closures spreads, some loyal patrons are discovering a small perk: Starbucks is crediting 200 bonus stars—equivalent to at least one complimentary beverage—to the accounts of customers whose regular neighborhood store is slated to close.
“This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers,” the company statement read. “Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.”
Looking ahead, the coffee giant indicated its intention to conclude the 2025 fiscal year operating 18,300 locations across the U.S. and Canada. Despite the current closures, Starbucks plans to resume expanding its store count beginning in 2026, signaling continued investment in the business. Over the next 12 months, the company also aims to enhance more than 1,000 existing locations as part of its “Back to Starbucks” initiative.
CEO Brian Niccol emphasized the company’s vision during a Q3 earnings call, stating, “Our goal is for every coffeehouse to deliver a warm and welcoming space with a great atmosphere and a seat for every occasion.” He added, “I’m confident that we’re not just getting Back to Starbucks, we are building a better Starbucks, where everyone can experience the best of Starbucks, one that is stronger, more resilient and consistently growing. A Starbucks that is once again the gold standard in customer service, partner experience, the coffeehouse experience, and financial performance.”

The Future for Starbucks Employees
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol confirmed that employees—referred to as “partners”—were informed last week if their store was among those affected by the shutdowns. “We’re working hard to offer transfers to nearby locations where possible and will move quickly to help partners understand what opportunities might be available to them,” he stated.
Niccol also addressed support for those who cannot be immediately placed, noting, “For those we can’t immediately place, we’re focused on partner care including comprehensive severance packages. We also hope to welcome many of these partners back to Starbucks in the future as new coffeehouses open and the number of partners in each location grows.”
