First Grader’s Urgent Note Leads to Mother’s Rescue in Westgate
WESTGATE – A quick-thinking first-grader is being credited with potentially saving his mother’s life last week after he passed a discreet note to his school bus driver, prompting an emergency call to 911. The note indicated that his mother was being held against her will.
The bus driver immediately followed the child’s instruction, contacting emergency services. Officers from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the child’s home in Westgate, located in the northeastern part of the state. There, they discovered the mother had sustained serious injuries consistent with an assault that had reportedly occurred throughout the previous night.
According to criminal complaints, the suspect, identified as Glenroy Miller, 29, allegedly held a knife to the victim’s throat and wrists, threatening to kill her.
Authorities arrived at the residence on Wednesday, where Miller answered the door. After officers requested to speak with the victim, she emerged from a bedroom, visibly upset and with bruising evident on her face. A subsequent medical examination at the hospital revealed she had suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung from being kicked.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the mother, unable to call for help herself, had tasked her child – a student with the Sumner-Fredericksburg School district – with seeking assistance.
Criminal complaints also detail that Miller, at one point during the night, began to transport the victim to a hospital but reportedly turned around and returned to the home when he realized he would likely face arrest.
Miller, originally from the Bahamas, was arrested and faces charges of domestic abuse assault with the intent to inflict serious injuries, second-degree kidnapping armed with a dangerous weapon, and obstructing emergency communications. He is currently being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer, in addition to a $1,500 bond for the current charges. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 8.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and while authorities described the incident as a domestic situation, they did not detail the specific relationship between Miller and the victim.
