Manchester, UK – In a distressing development following a deadly terrorist attack at a Manchester synagogue, authorities have revealed that two of the victims, one fatally wounded and another hospitalized, appear to have been shot by police officers responding to the incident. The Greater Manchester Police made the announcement on Friday, stating their initial investigation indicates the assailant possessed no firearms.
The attack, which occurred early Thursday at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, involved Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent. Police allege Al-Shamie drove a vehicle into a crowd outside the synagogue before exiting and attacking individuals with a blade.
Chief Constable Stephen Watson confirmed the preliminary findings regarding the gunshot wounds. “The Home Office Pathologist has advised that he has provisionally determined, that one of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury,” Watson stated.
Police believe the victims were likely struck by officer gunfire because Al-Shamie, who was fatally shot by police, was not found to be in possession of any firearms. Congregants had bravely blockaded themselves inside the synagogue, preventing the attacker from gaining entry as the assault unfolded. It is believed both victims who sustained gunshot injuries were sheltering inside the synagogue, “close together” behind a door.
The two individuals killed in the attack have been identified as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Daulby’s family released a statement honoring him as a “hero” who died while attempting to save others.
“He was a beloved brother, loving uncle to his four nieces and one nephew and a cherished cousin,” the family said. “The family is shocked by the tragic, sudden death of such a lovely down to earth man.
His final act was one of profound courage and he will forever be remembered for his heroic act.”
Law enforcement has not yet specified which of the victims appeared to have been hit by police gunfire. The injured victim who was shot is among three individuals currently receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.
In connection with the incident, three additional suspects – two men and a woman – were taken into custody on Thursday and arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation, and instigation of acts of terrorism.
Meanwhile, Al-Shamie’s family has issued a statement condemning the attack, expressing “deep shock and sorrow over what has happened.” They affirmed, “We fully distance ourselves from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow over what has happened. Our hearts and thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”
