Chi-Chi’s Is Back! Iconic Tex-Mex Chain Returns, Stirring Up Nostalgia and New Flavors

Get ready to dust off those ’80s and ’90s memories, because Chi-Chi’s, the beloved Tex-Mex restaurant chain, has made a triumphant return! Earlier this week, the first new location opened its doors, welcoming back diners eager to relive their favorite moments, complete with endless chips and salsa and those legendary oversized margaritas. People are already flocking to the restaurant, and we’ve got all the details on what to expect, from the menu to the ambiance, and what early customers are saying.

The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Chi-Chi’s

For those who remember Chi-Chi’s fondly, its disappearance was a sad chapter. The chain faced a devastating one-two punch in 2003 and 2004.

First, it filed for bankruptcy, and shortly after, a major hepatitis A outbreak linked to green onions served at a Pennsylvania location sickened 660 people and resulted in four deaths. This became the largest hepatitis A outbreak in U.S. history, and the brand struggled to recover, with its last locations closing in 2004.

But like a phoenix from the ashes, Chi-Chi’s is back! Late last year, Michael McDermott, the son of the original Chi-Chi’s founder, announced his plans to revive the beloved chain.

“I still have fond memories of growing up in the Chi-Chi’s restaurants that my father built,” McDermott stated in a news release, expressing his belief in the brand’s enduring appeal. (And for a fun fact: the restaurant is named after McDermott’s grandmother, Chi-Chi!)

Where to Find the New Chi-Chi’s

The grand comeback location for Chi-Chi’s has landed in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, a vibrant suburb of Minneapolis.

This location holds a special significance, as it’s not far from the original 1975 restaurant that first opened in Richfield, another Minneapolis suburb. If you’re looking to grab a table, set your GPS for 1602 West End Blvd.

A Menu That Blends Old Favorites with Fresh Flavors

The new Chi-Chi’s menu strikes a delightful balance between nostalgic classics and exciting new additions. Fans will be thrilled to see favorites like Nachos Grande and the Mexican Pizza making a comeback. The iconic taco salad, served in its signature puffy fried tortilla bowl, is also back, alongside massive fried chimichangas and the ever-popular fried ice cream.

However, prepare for some delicious surprises! The guacamole now features a mango topping, and new offerings include Mexican street corn with manchego cheese, shrimp and crab ceviche, and mahi tacos – ingredients that certainly broaden the culinary horizons from the ’80s menu.

As for the price tag, diners will find the menu quite reasonable. A classic fried ice cream is just $7, a chicken chimichanga will set you back $16, and a plate of enchiladas comes in at $18.

What Are Diners Saying?

The word is out, and those lucky enough to visit the new Chi-Chi’s are largely raving about it on social media. Expect a wait for a table, so reservations are a smart move!

One TikToker, Sota Food Tour, described eating the short rib chimichanga as a “time warp back to my childhood,” praising the fresh, hot tortilla chips. While he noted that the birria tacos might not be the best in the city, he still gave the overall experience a solid 7.2 out of 10.

YouTube’s Matt & Goo Review highlighted the fantastic-looking (and tasting) Mexican pizza. Meanwhile, TikToker Jason DeRusha called the flautas “legit tasty” and declared the fried ice cream “fabulous,” though he advised opting for an upgraded margarita over the giant house version.

Beyond the food, the “vibes” have also received a refresh. While you won’t feel like you’ve stepped exactly back in time, customers appreciate the updated atmosphere and decor, featuring hanging plants, painted tile, and vintage Chi-Chi’s photos. It’s a modern twist on a beloved classic, and it seems to be hitting all the right notes!
