Hollywood Icon Diane Keaton Passes Away at 79; Jane Fonda Leads Tributes
Hollywood is mourning the loss of acclaimed actress Diane Keaton, who passed away on Saturday in California at the age of 79. A family spokesperson confirmed the news to People magazine, requesting privacy during this time of profound sadness.
Keaton, a beloved figure in film, is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke. She was celebrated for her memorable roles in cinematic classics such as Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, and the iconic Annie Hall, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1978 Academy Awards. Her career also included the popular 2018 romantic comedy Book Club, where she starred alongside Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, and Jane Fonda.
Following the news of her passing, fellow veteran actress and close friend Jane Fonda shared a heartfelt tribute to Keaton on social media. In an emotional Instagram post, Fonda expressed her difficulty in accepting the loss, celebrating Keaton’s vibrant spirit and unique contributions.
“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view,” Fonda wrote.
She continued, “Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man, she was a fine actress!”
The tribute prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans and colleagues alike. Fellow Book Club co-star Mary Steenburgen also shared her grief, commenting, “Yes, hard to believe. Perfect tribute to the American treasure that was Diane.”
Fonda had previously spoken about the deep bond formed among the cast of Book Club, telling Today that “real friendships were formed” during their first collaboration. Keaton, ever the wit, playfully admitted her favorite part of filming was a kissing scene with Andy Garcia.
Diane Keaton leaves behind a rich legacy of performances that touched audiences worldwide, and her unique spirit will be profoundly missed.
