Walmart Teams Up with OpenAI for Next-Gen Shopping Experience
BENTONVILLE, AR – Get ready to ditch the endless scrolling! Walmart is diving deeper into the world of artificial intelligence with a groundbreaking new partnership with OpenAI that promises to revolutionize how we shop. Soon, customers will be able to purchase Walmart products directly through ChatGPT, thanks to a new in-chat shopping feature called “Instant Checkout.”
While the exact launch date remains under wraps, both companies confirm this innovative feature will be available to Walmart shoppers “soon.” This move highlights the accelerating trend of AI redefining the entire retail landscape.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon emphasized the shift, stating, “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change. There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual.”
This isn’t Walmart’s first rodeo with AI. The retail giant, along with Sam’s Club, has been leveraging AI technology for over seven years to boost employee efficiency and streamline the customer experience. This includes “Ask Sam,” a voice assistant that automates tasks for associates.
McMillon has been a vocal proponent of AI’s transformative power, even noting at a recent workforce conference that the technology is “going to change literally every job.” While some roles and tasks may be impacted, he also stressed that AI will pave the way for new positions within the company.
Just last month, Walmart and OpenAI joined forces to offer free AI training to both frontline and office workers, preparing them for the “jobs of tomorrow.” A Walmart spokesperson previously told FOX Business, “Walmart has a history of getting stronger in moments of change, and with AI, we’re not waiting around – we’re leaning in to make it work for our customers, associates and partners.”
As companies like OpenAI and Nvidia race to enhance computing power and infrastructure to meet the surging demands of AI models, all eyes are on which innovators will deliver the most efficient and scalable solutions for the next generation of generative AI. For Walmart, this partnership marks a significant step into the future of retail.
